Director of Development

1Hood Media Academy seeks a Director of Development to lead our Development Team. This position will report to and work closely with the CEO to develop, implement, and lead fundraising strategies that engage values-aligned donors who want to support and sustain our work and demonstrate and provide strategy and support for key data and information processes to help 1Hood demonstrate our community impact.

Job Responsibilities

Fundraising and Development - 80%

  • Develop ambitious but reasonable comprehensive annual fundraising goals, including raising $2 - 3M annually through a mix of grants, individual, and corporate donations, that engages and grows our group of values-aligned individual, corporate, and foundation partners and progresses our organization towards long-term financial security in accordance with our values. 1Hood’s CEO, donor relations coordinator and grant writer(s) will provide support in reaching these goals.

  • Track success and make quarterly adjustments to the plan to reach goals while elevating Our Community, Our Support as an overall fundraising approach.

  • Oversee and support all fundraising campaigns and activities, including grant writing and reporting, individual and corporate giving, donor and funder engagement, and communications.

  • Oversee the development staff (Grant Writer and Donor Relations Coordinator) to ensure individual goals align with the organizational strategy and metrics and tasks are met.

  • Create departmental plans for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities, including promoting planned giving opportunities.

  • Oversee donor database (currently Salesforce) and tracking systems (including Google Drive) to track donations, funding opportunities, and reporting requirements.

  • Provide backend systems administrator support for the donor database; maintain complete and organized donor and funder records, maintaining the accuracy and up to date information; create reports that provide insight into donor-giving patterns, oversee and train staff (grant writer, donor relationships coordinator, executive assistant) who use Salesforce; identify new systems and tools as needed.

  • Prioritize departmental activities to meet organizational objectives and goals

  • Analyze the performance of events and other fundraising activities for cost-effectiveness and continuous improvement

  • Research and analyze revenue growth opportunities that accelerate 1Hood's strategic initiatives and events; maintain a year-round revenue pipeline

  • Provide reports to executive leaders and board members as requested.

  • Uses donor data, insights, and research to inform the creation of donor and funder prospect pipelines and cultivation plans.

  • Develop department SOPS for CRM (currently Salesforce) and key development processes, including donor acknowledgment and fundraising and engagement campaigns (recurring donor campaign, Give Big Pittsburgh/Giving Tuesday, 1Hood

  • Partner House Party, Break Bread with 1Hood, and others).

  • Work directly with and in support of the 1Hood Board, including board development,

    fundraising from board members, supporting their outreach to donors, foundations,

    corporations, and other potential partners to solicit annual gifts, endowment support, and other more than money types of support.

  • In partnership with the Board Chair, research, develop, and launch a 1Hood Endowment campaign to provide sustaining, unrestricted support for 1Hood’s mission.

  • Provide strategy, guidance, and support to leadership and development staff in

    developing relationships with current and potential donors.

  • Manage a small portfolio of individual and corporate donors and prospects with the goal of understanding how and why they give, maintaining or increasing their gift level and/or frequency, and identifying ways to partner beyond money.

  • Identify, solicit, and cultivate relationships with appropriate community partners, donors, funders, and prospects, including identifying the best 1Hood staff member to maintain the relationship.

  • Collaborate with staff to ensure best-in-class fundraising and engagement campaigns and events that demonstrate impact, provide opportunities for meaningful engagement, and engage current and new supporters.

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of development, data and

    information, and community impact projects including but not limited to 1Hood economic impact report, survey development, strategic growth engagement and any consultant based engagement that may overlap with duties..

  • Prepare and present professional partnership proposals presentations to generate new partnership initiatives

  • Stay connected to 1Hood’s stories and impact to highlight growth and challenges for supporters.

  • Composes correspondence as necessary in support of the CEO and Board.

  • Files all necessary development related paperwork on local, state and national levels to ensure that fundraising is fluid and without interruption.

Board, Volunteer, and Intern Recruitment and Engagement 15%

  • In collaboration with 1Hood’s Board Chair and CEO, help support board development efforts, including board recruitment, engagement, and fundraising.

  • Help identify, recruit, and steward values-aligned volunteers and interns that support 1Hood’s mission and programs.

  • Provide opportunities for volunteers and interns to become donors and/or 1Hood supporters in varied ways.

Other - 5%

  • Other duties as assigned and required to support the team and organizational goals.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in communication, public relations, journalism or related/applicable area;

  • Five years of non-profit fundraising/development experience

  • Demonstrated commitment to social and racial justice

  • Experience working effectively and connecting with diverse populations and valuing differences of race, ethnicity, age, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, ability, and socio-economic circumstances

  • Demonstrated ability to work and cultivate relationships across a variety of sectors,

    communities, and levels to ensure mission alignment and reach

  • Previous experience writing and reporting on grants from foundations, organizations, and individuals

  • Experience with a donor management software

  • Working knowledge and proficiency of Microsoft Office

  • Exceptional time-management, written and oral communication skills, including public speaking and delivering presentations

  • Excellent people skills and experience working effectively and connecting with diverse populations and valuing differences of race, ethnicity, age, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, ability, and socio-economic circumstances.

  • Self-starter, able to work independently, and demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously while managing deadlines


Expected hours of work

This is a full-time mostly remote position at 37.5 hours a week. While this position can work remotely and offers flexibility, the person hired for this position is expected to be in the 1Hood office (460 Melwood Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213) at least once a week (Tuesday afternoons are ideal) and attend 1Hood events. We’ve found that in office and event engagement is the best way to truly get to know our staff, programs, and culture.

Deputy Director

The Deputy Director is a senior leadership position, partnering with the CEO and other senior staff on strategy and fund development while supporting a strong and growing team. This role involves ensuring operational effectiveness, managing key organizational functions, and maintaining strong internal and external relationships. The Deputy Director will support and embody the core values and leadership to achieve 1Hood’s mission.

Job Responsibilities

Leadership and Management

  • Contribute to strategic planning and key decisions around organizational priorities

  • Ensure smooth operations of the organization in partnership with the CEO

  • Oversee complex and cross-departmental projects that contribute to our mission

  • Represent 1Hood as requested in collaborative workgroups and other public settings

  • Keep abreast of trends and new developments in the nonprofit sector

  • Act as a liaison between the CEO and staff, ensuring clear communication and alignment with organizational goals

Human Resources

  • Oversee Human Resources initiatives to ensure compliance with state, federal, and local laws and practices 

  • Partner with the CEO to foster a positive workplace culture

  • Ensure continuous professional development for staff to support organizational growth, 

  • Address facilities need and ensure the organization is legally compliant, carries appropriate insurance, and manages risk appropriately 

Financial Management

  • Assist in the development and management of the annual budget, including collaborating with staff on budgeting, tracking, and reporting finances

  • Monitor financial performance and ensure financial sustainability and accountability.

  • Ensure compliance with financial policies and procedures.

Board Relations

  • Support the CEO Board relations

  • Prepare reports and presentations for board meetings

  • Attend board meetings and provide updates on organizational activities and performance

Program Management

  • Oversee grant writing, grants initiatives, fundraising, and donor relations efforts 

  • Ensure grant proposals are submitted and reported on a timely basis

  • Assist with grant and contract proposals and budgets 

  • Participate in developing and implementing strategies to expand 1Hood’s donor base

  • Solicit sponsors for events and seek out additional sources of funding that help to further our mission

  • Plan and lead staff retreats, meetings, and other special events as needed

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in nonprofit management, with demonstrated leadership and management skills; Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience preferred

  • Proven experience in financial management, program development and budgeting skills

  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Passion for and knowledge around the nonprofit sector, as well as leadership experience in nonprofits

  • Successful experience supervising others, shaping human resources programs, and/or leading DEI&B efforts

  • Excellent customer service, networking, and relationship management skills

  • Outstanding verbal and written communications

  • Ability to manage multiple complex, collaborative projects effectively and professionally

Donor Relations Coordinator

1Hood Media Academy seeks a donor relations coordinator to join our Development Team. This position will report to and work closely with the Director of Development to build, manage, and implement giving strategies that engage values-aligned donors who want to support and sustain our work. 

The ideal candidate has great communication skills (written and verbal), a warm demeanor who can build and maintain relationships with many different people including donors, partners, and 1Hood staff, an active and empathetic listener, as curious to learn as you are to share your skills and experiences, impeccable attention to detail, holds themselves accountable and isn’t afraid to ask for help, believes in a community-centric fundraising approach, our organizational values, and philanthropic partner values, and isn’t afraid to challenge the current philanthropic status quo. They also believe in the potential for social change through strengthening the capacity of individuals and communities to advocate on their own behalf. 


Job Responsibilities

  • Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not strictly limited to:

  • Proactively develop and manage intentional cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies to build relationships with current and potential donors. 

  • Manage a portfolio of individual and corporate donors and prospects with the goal of understanding how and why they give, maintaining or increasing their gift level and/or frequency, and identifying ways to partner beyond money. 

  • Lead two to four fundraising and engagement campaigns annually with the support and guidance of the Director of Development including an annual recurring donor campaign, Give Big Pittsburgh/Giving Tuesday, and donor/partner spotlight). 

  • Creates warm and engaging donor communications including acknowledgement emails, fundraising campaign messaging for email and social media, and other projects as assigned.

  • Assists with the creation and finalization of segmented donor lists for prospect research, fundraising campaigns, events, and other intentional engagement. 

  • With support from the Director of Development, leads CRM data entry (currently Salesforce) including recording and acknowledging gifts and grants promptly, documenting donor interactions, and reporting on fundraising campaigns. Maintains the accuracy and integrity of databases by ensuring that all information is kept current and up to date.

  • Provide feedback and suggestions for process improvements. 

  • Track and report the status of activities both internally to 1Hood staff and board and externally to partners, funders, and the community as needed.

  • Assists in scheduling meetings with prospective funders and donors.

  • Provides support to staff, committees, and volunteers during fundraising campaigns, special events, and programmatic events like Fridays on Deck, Artivist Academy, People, Politics, and Power, and others.  

  • In coordination with founders and Director of Development, develop relationships with allies and other organizations to extend 1Hood’s network of supporters. 

  • Participate in weekly staff meetings and 1Hood sponsored initiatives.

  • Work with a range of stakeholders, including agency heads, local officials, individuals, community leaders, members, grassroots groups, and other advocates to support 1Hood fundraising initiatives.

  • Represent 1Hood in task forces, working groups, and coalitions.

  • Prepare and deliver presentations and testimony to support advocacy efforts as requested.

  • Exhibits understanding and internalization of1Hood’s values; act with integrity, art is essential, be authentic, be civically engaged, be culturally competent, be of service, rooted in community, steeped in Blackness

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED; Associate degree preferred.

  • Two-years related experience and knowledge of the principles and practices of non-profit fundraising activities including gift entry, database administration and records management, and developing and cultivating donor relationships. Ideal candidates will have experience managing fundraising campaigns and a portfolio of donors. 

  • Proficient in Google Drive (Docs, Sheets, Forms, etc.). Experience using SalesForce or other donor CRMs, Canva, and Basecamp, or proven ability to learn.

  • Demonstrated commitment to social and racial justice.

  • Experience working effectively and connecting with diverse populations and valuing differences of race, ethnicity, age, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, ability, and socio-economic circumstances.

  • Commitment to and experience with working in close partnership with funders and community members.

1Hood Media seeks a passionate and driven intern for a long-term commitment to support grassroots initiatives and is dedicated to the organizational mission. This is an extraordinary opportunity to gain mentorship, practical/business operational, hands-on professional development, community engagement, logistical/strategic planning, and grant-writing experience. 

Further, this internship provides a unique opportunity to shadow 1Hood’s talented team in all areas of 1Hood’s operations, and a “bird’s-eye view” into the impact of coordinated community response and resource alignment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Learn about 1Hood’s mission, brand, community support, organization goals and other aspects of our services; collaborate with various departments to develop/support brand strategies to drive organizational value

  • Support and collaborate with the team in initiatives and projects, including administrative tasks, research, policy review, reporting, events, marketing, advocacy and outreach; other operational tasks upon as needed to further 1Hood’s mission

  • Plan and assist with 1Hood events; actively engage with community partners, members, and participants

  • Conduct research and investigate new grant sources, key industry trends and competitive insights

  • Analyze data to identify trends and collaborate with the team to propose new channels and refine current strategies

  • Support the team in daily marketing and administrative tasks; prepare and organize marketing materials for events and meetings

  • Actively participate in 1Hood’s team meetings and collaborate with other team members

  • Other duties as assigned to support leadership and the team in 1Hood’s programming 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Undergrad/Grad college or university program Preferred Major(s): Economic Development, Urban Studies, Business Administration, Marketing, Public Administration, Criminal Justice, Social Work or similar with a decisive career path and trajectory

  • Strong customer service acumen; event support experience preferred

  • Strong organizational, writing and communication skills (for contacting partners/guests with programs updates, grant-writing, marketing/content, and instructional materials)

  • Familiarity with Google Workspace,  Microsoft Office (Excel, Word & PowerPoint), and social media acumen (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)

  • Able to work on-site in Pittsburgh, with access to reliable transportation
