Join 1Hood Media Thursday, Oct 26th at 7pm for People, Politics, & Power, featuring a conversation with Yusef Salaam of the Exonerated 5!

In 1989, at just fifteen years young, Dr. Yusef Salaam was tried and convicted in the “Central Park Jogger” case along with four other Black and Latinx young men. The Exonerated Five spent between seven to 13 years behind bars for crimes they did not commit, until their sentences were overturned in 2002. Since then, they have received a multi-million dollar settlement from the city of New York for its injustice and have been profiled in award-winning films, including The Central Park Five documentary from Ken Burns, Sarah Burns and David McMahon and most recently the Emmy award-winning Netflix limited series When They See Us, written and directed by Ava DuVernay.

Break Bread with 1Hood Media

Join us on 12/8 from 5:30-8:30pm at the Blaxk Box to share a meal with 1Hood staff, supporters, and community partners, learn about 1Hood’s collective community work, and discuss our philanthropic partner values.

As 1Hood grows our network of supporters, our philanthropic partner values will help ground our engagement with our supporters in a way that aligns with 1Hood’s values and our Five Pillars of Engagement (Arts and Culture, Media, Education, Activism, Collaboration).

These values and having people-centered conversations helps us to center collaboration, cultural competency, and service to our community as we expand our capacity and respond to community needs.

Our Philanthropic Partner Values

Our Community, Our Support: Everything we do, including raising money, places community-first. Together - 1Hood staff and board members, community members and partners, individual donor and foundation partners - we share resources, shift power, and provide opportunity with respect and in response to community needs.

Black-led and social justice focused: We focus on issues, events, and ideas particularly relevant to Black peoples of Africa’s diaspora. Our work and funding is used to challenge inequity, raise awareness of and contextualize our historical struggles, and build liberated communities through the arts, education, and social justice. We have necessary and sometimes uncomfortable conversations about race, wealth disparities, and wealth redistribution within our staff, communities, and with our philanthropic partners.

Holistic work, holistic funding: We recognize that general operating support allows us to be the most effective, flexible, and with fewer barriers as we respond to community needs. Our team, projects, and partnerships are connected, collaborative, and our strength. Donors who share our values and provide unrestricted support are key to our long-term sustainability and community impact, including our commitment to share resources with aligned organizations, artists, small businesses, and partners.

Shifting Power: We’re shifting the donor dynamic from donor power to partnership by amplifying the experience and decision-making power of those working in our communities and sharing social capital as much as dollars donated. Making this power shift requires all of us to confront, analyze, and unlearn the power, race, and wealth dynamics in philanthropy.

This event's capacity is 50, masks will available, and we ask that anyone not feeling well leading up to the event to stay home, rest, and connect with us in the new year.

---

Accessibility: Unfortunately, our space is not ADA accessible (yet). Guests will climb a small flight of wide stairs to access the Blaxk Box. ASL interpretation available. If you require this or any other accommodation, please email Mahogany at mahogany@1hood.org

Parking: Parking is available in front of the Blumcraft Building and in our parking lot behind the building (driveway to the left). Bike racks are available and we’re a short walk from several bus stops. We also encourage you to ride share with a friend!

Thrival 2019 Artist Lineup Announced

PITTSBURGH, Aug. 29, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- The seventh annual Thrival Music Festival will take place on Friday, September 20, 2019 from noon-11PM in Schenley Plaza in Oakland. This free event will feature musicians, artists and installations centered around the theme "By Pittsburgh. For Pittsburgh. For the World."

Headlining the festival at the Sheetz Main Stage will be Pittsburgh-native, national DJ and producer BUKU. BUKU combines deceptively simple and emotive melodies, laden with resounding low-end and intricate drum patterns. Beauty Slap and TitleTown will be supporting BUKU earlier in the evening. 1Hood Media, which has stood as a beacon for artist activists and musicians alike, will also be showcasing eight local acts.

Thrival is also excited to announce a one-night-only collaboration with Everyone Orchestra, conducted by Matt Butler featuring some of Pittsburgh's best talent. Each show is 100% unique, as a carefully curated lineup of performers is guided through high energy, creative, danceable grooves, and beautiful songs that you won't believe are created on the fly.

"This is our first year participating in Thrival, and we are excited to sponsor the main stage," according to Mary Beth Green, Head of Innovation, at Sheetz. "We are focused on technology and innovation to improve both the customer and employee experience, and Thrival is a great platform to showcase these advancements."

Thrival is turning Schenley Plaza into a true festival with artists, installations and fitness classes. The Wicked Collective will takeover the garden area of Schenley Plaza to celebrate everything festival culture from flower crowns to a man on stilts to a pop-up stage featuring singers and songwriters, rappers, and acoustic musicians starting at noon. CycleBar Robinson will be engaging the fitness community in outdoor spin classes and vendors will be selling crafts throughout the day, including a showcase of PG&H makers. Tastings from Stateside Vodka, Wigle Whiskey, and local breweries will also be onsite.

In a newly announced partnership, Uber Advanced Technologies Group (Uber ATG) is partnering with Thrival to paint a self-driving vehicle onsite. As Uber ATG continues pushing innovation in Pittsburgh, new self-driving Uber vehicles will be hitting the road soon. To celebrate, Thrival and Uber ATG have commissioned CamPaints to transform a retired self-driving car into a piece of artwork representing the city.

"Maintaining vibrant, accessible public green spaces throughout the city is a priority for us and the City of Pittsburgh," said John Pepper, Director of Communications, Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy. "Spaces like Schenley Plaza provide cutting-edge, energetic public events like Thrival the opportunity to deliver unique and memorable experiences."

For more information about Thrival, visit thrivalfestival.com. Tickets are available for purchase at eventbrite.com.

Thrival Innovation and Music Festival releases full 2019 artist lineup

Over its six-year run, the annual Thrival Innovation and Music Festival has bounced from place to place, landing in the Bakery Square and Carrie Furnace, all with varying degrees of success and a few bumps along the way. From Sept. 18-20, the event returns, this time in the Carnegie Museum of Art and Schenley Plaza in Oakland, with another round of live music, art, and guest speakers.

Thrival, an event organized by the startup incubator and coworking space Ascender, just announced its full lineup (the headliners were revealed in June). Under the theme of "By Pittsburgh. For Pittsburgh. For the World," Thrival will focus on “celebrating and supporting Pittsburgh innovators and entrepreneurs,” and will feature innovators in business, research, and the arts, says a press release.

From Sept. 18-19, the Thrival Innovation Summit convenes at the Carnegie Museum of Art with panels on emerging technologies in robotics, manufacturing, biotech, and more.

On Sept. 20, headliner BUKU, a Pittsburgh-native, national DJ, producer, will take the Sheetz Main Stage in Schenley Plaza, and will be joined by Beauty Slap and Title Town. The Pittsburgh arts and activism collective 1Hood Media will also present eight local acts.

Also on the docket is a one-night-only collaboration with Everyone Orchestra. Conducted by Matt Butler, Everyone Orchestra invites musicians and audience members to create a totally improvised performance.

Given that two major universities, Pitt and CMU, are both within walking distance, it’s fair to assume that plenty of students will be at Schenley Plaza for the event, which the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy sees as a big plus.

“Maintaining vibrant, accessible public green spaces throughout the city is a priority for us and the City of Pittsburgh,” says Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy director of communication John Pepper, in a press release. “Spaces like Schenley Plaza provide cutting-edge, energetic public events like Thrival the opportunity to deliver unique and memorable experiences.”

Besides the main stage, the festival will feature art installations, spin classes by CycleBar Robinson, and a showcase by the Wicked Pittsburgh Collective with flower crowns, a stilt-walker, and a pop-up stage with various live music acts at noon.

There will also be craft vendors and tastings from Stateside Vodka, Wigle Whiskey, and local breweries.

In addition, CamPaints will turn a self-driving car from Uber Advanced Technologies Group into a piece of art as a way to, as one press release puts it, celebrate new autonomous Uber vehicles that will be “hitting the road soon” in Pittsburgh.

The Thrival music festival in Schenley Plaza is free, while tickets for the Innovation Summit cost $75-300.

PITTSBURGH ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!

WHY IS LEON STILL SEEKING JUSTICE?
Join us on the anniversary of the shooting of Leon Ford Jr. as we send a message to Pittsburgh to do the right thing and settle this civil suit on behalf of their officer who shot and paralyzed Leon.

WHAT IS GOING ON WITH ZAPPALA? CHARGING YOUTH AND NOT THEIR ADULT ABUSERS?
We insist District Attorney Stephen Zappala drop the charges off of young Que'Chawn Wade who will be going to trial as a defendant on Monday, November 13th instead of a plaintiff. He was brutally assaulted at Woodland Hills High school by Churchill police officer Steve Shaulis. We insist that officer Shaulis be charged instead.

There has been a rise in complaints, many coming from residents of the city of Pittsburgh, against police officers. There are several open cases right now. We demand ACCOUNTABILITY NOW!!
